LANTERN IN COVID

From March 2020 to June 2021, the Lantern Team collaborated with EAT NC (formerly Durham FEAST) to help cook and move more than 1,000,000 meals.

In March 2021, in partnership with No Kid Hungry and EAT NC, we turned our Kitchen Patrol program virtual for the spring semester by launching a series of live online cooking classes.

Kitchen Patrol is Lantern’s project to teach children the skills they need for a lifetime of healthy cooking and eating.

Since 2015, in partnership with UNC’s Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture, we have taught weekly cooking classes with 4th and 5th grade students from Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools in downtown Chapel Hill.

In March 2021, in partnership with No Kid Hungry and EAT NC, we are launching a program of live online cooking classes, with complete ingredient boxes delivered directly to the home kitchens of underserved elementary school students and their families in Orange County, Durham and Chapel Hill- Carrboro. 

Each 90-minute class will focus on foundational kitchen skills, as well as joyful, improvisational cooking, with lively, interactive cook-alongs, guest chefs and virtual farm trip and harvest.

During the 10-week series, which will include complete, home-delivered ingredient boxes, we will create sit-down family meals with vegetables, fruit, grains, meat, and seafood sourced from local farms, ranches, and fisheries. By the end of the instruction year, students and their families will have cooked 10 suppers and made 1,200 individual meals together using our online curriculum and ingredient boxes.

Students will also create and distribute homemade cookbooks. At the end of each semester, students will design a cover for their very own KP cookbook, which contains all the recipes they've made over the course of the year, so they can share them with their family and keep cooking at home.
